Ethiopian and Irish actress Ruth Negga reads from Zadie Smith’s Swing Time. Ruth Negga was nominated for the Golden Globes for her role in Loving, an American movie about interracial marriage.

Smith’s novel explores status and class and the way these distinctions shift between Africa and the Western world; a shift to which Negga herself can relate, being of Ethiopian and Irish descent.

Zadie Smith’s Swing Time takes us back to 1982 London and follows a pair of 7-year-old girls from neighboring housing estates who meet in a dance class in northwest London (where Smith was raised and now lives with her family part of the year). Negga reads an excerpt from the first chapter of the book.

The poetry in Smith’s writing is palpable throughout Swing Time. The art of dance—a prominent theme in the book—transports the characters as well as the reader into Smith’s beautifully imagined narrative. Negga does an excellent job of conveying the beauty of Smith’s writing.
