Last year, we shared the news that the Shanghai Translation Publishing House had acquired the Chinese language rights to all 10 novels by Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah, published in English between 1987 and 2000, with five of them scheduled for publication in 2022.
We are super excited to share the news that the novels are now live! According to Chinese Linguist Bruce Humes, the five novels published in the first batch, which are already being marketed, include《天堂》(Paradise),《来世》(After Lives),《赞美沉默》(Admiring Silence),《最后的礼物》(The Last Gift) and《海边》(By the Sea). They will eventually be available in ebook format as well.
The remaining five novels, which are scheduled for publication in 2023 are Memory of Departure, Gravel’s Heart, Pilgrims Way, Dottie, and Desertion.
Abdulrazak Gurnah’s inspiring literary journey culminated to a joyous height when he was announced winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, the second Black African after Nigeria’s Wole Soyinka. In this new remarkable feat, he joins a rare cohort of African authors to have their work published in the Chinese language including Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, J.M. Coetzee, Gael Faye, Nurrudin Farah, and Buchi Emecheta.
