The inaugural edition of the House of African Feminisms Festival was held from February 10 to 12, 2023 at the Goethe-Institut in Côte d’Ivoire. The theme of the festival was “Feminist Reflections of Love and Community Building” and based on the photos, the fest was definitely a success!
The House of African Feminisms (HoAF) is a platform for African feminist resources and the goal of the festival was to foster cultural exchange and learning. Go here to see more about the aims of the festival, covered by Brittle Paper last month.
The 2023 edition of the festival consisted of both in-person and virtual events. It featured writing masterclasses, panel discussions, book exchanges and readings, article chats, conversations, multimedia exhibition, concert, and more.
Here are some of the highlights from the festival.
During the first day, attendees got the chance to learn from some of the most influential feminist workers and thinkers, including Sylvia Apata, Laeila Adjovi and Efua Oyofo, who led the day’s masterclasses.
According to the HoAF Facebook caption, “First day was full of love and learning!”
After a successful first day, Day 2 of the festival included a panel with Sylvia Ilahuka, Tiffany Kagure and Solange Musanganya, followed by the opening of a multimedia exhibition at Something – Blockhaus Cocody, and a conversation with Laeila Adjovi with Dion is the best. During the evening, there was a concert by Malian rapper Ami Yerewolo and a Chabela’s DJ set at the Bushman.
HoAF remarked on Facebook, “The highlights of day two! What a wonderful day filled with joy and dancing!”
On the last day of the festival, all attendees enjoyed a Sunday filled with fellowship and laughter. HoAF expressed their gratitude to participants for all their support.
