Once upon a darkened night,
A dusty flag was unfurled,
A part painted in bloody red,
From the souls of the great fathers.
A little bright blue too
From the river’s mouth to the banks.
Then a pure green
From Nature’s greenest gifts.
And twin white stripes
Calling for eternal freedom.

Rise with both hands,
Salute the valiant spirits
Who bore Uhuru in ’65.
Rise with unity’s voice
Sing for the brave hearts
That beat through time and tide,
For the warriors who fought
And the martyrs who died
For the dream of a nation
For The Gambia our homeland.
