Olubunmi Familoni, Winner of the Nigeria Prize for Literature

On October 11, 2024, the Nigerian literary and scientific communities gathered at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos to celebrate the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) Prize for Literature and Prize for Science. The event, themed “Looking to the Future,” was part of NLNG’s 35th anniversary celebrations and marked 20 years since the establishment of the prestigious prizes.

In his opening remarks, NLNG’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Philip Mshelbila remarked that the prizes embody the company’s commitment to excellence in literature and science. The event brought together distinguished guests, some of whom arrived in futuristic attire, reflecting the theme of the event.

One of the evening’s highlights was the grand entrance of King Edward Asimini William-Dappa Pepple III, accompanied by masquerades. Guests also met NLNG Prize for Science winners, Kunle Remi and Remi Badru.

The literary spotlight of the evening was on Olubunmi Familoni, who won the coveted NLNG Prize for Literature for his novel The Road Does Not End. Familoni’s work, which explores the struggles of vulnerable youth in Nigeria, earned him $100,000 USD. This year’s prize focused on children’s literature.

The event also featured the documentary NLNG @ 35, which charts the company’s journey over the years, and A View to the Future, a short film aimed at children that explored the impact of technology on everyday life.

Attendees were treated to lively performances, thoughtful speeches, and a dancing
