What happens when a 13 year old girl is beheaded before a mass of cheering villagers?
The Nigerian writer William Ifeanyi Moore is collaborating with the creative Medevor Jarell Obor on a series called 13 Moons—an illustrated novella series mixing African folklore and fantasy fiction, with artwork by the London-based illustrator Ochuko Michael Obor.
In parts action, horror, suspense, and mystery, 13 Moons draws on the tradition of oral storytelling “to deliver a narrative about injustice in the context of African societies and politics” and “invites Nigerians and the larger African continent to reflect on social conditions. . . through a series of events in a fictional African village.” The series, its creators say, “promises to be like nothing our audience has seen in recent times, stylistically and thematically.”
On its release, 13 Moons trended on Twitter at the No 3 spot and reached 30,000 downloads. So far, it has seen 15 issues, released in a Netflix-style bulk offering for the binging pleasures of readers.
William Ifeanyi Moore is a writer and poet with an interest in using stories to illuminate psycho-social and political conditions. His first novel, Lonely Roads, was published in 2015. 13 Moons is a breath of fresh air! Safe to say a film adaptation would be well-received.
