Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Sefi Atta will be among the guests at the 2019 Felabration, the annual music festival in memory of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The week-long event, to be held from 14-20 October at the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, will also be graced by the Ugandan pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, the British rapper and activist Akala, and the law professor Akin Oyebode.
Founded in 1998 by Fela’s daughter Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, Felabration is held to coincide with the late Afrobeat pioneer’s birthday on 15 October. The 2019 theme, “From Lagos with Love,” is derived from Fela’s song “Eko Ile.”
The celebration—preceded by an Afrobics Dance Competition on 21 September, an art competition on 28 September, and a secondary schools debate on October 9—will also happen in New York, the Philippines, and Singapore.
