Nigerian author Oluyemi M. Falomo’s latest children’s book The Princess and The Gourd celebrates African heritage and the importance of family. Published in December 2023 by Falhouse Books, the book is perfect for children aged 6 to 10.

Showcasing a fresh perspective in children’s literature, this heartwarming story follows Princess Belwa, a kind and graceful young woman, and her wise king father as they search for the perfect prince. Joining them is Malendo, a captivating adventurer who takes them on a journey filled with valuable lessons about compassion and responsibility.

The Princess and the Gourd is a story I told my children over 30 years ago. It has always been my dream to have the book published and I’m grateful I was able to work alongside my daughter to make that dream a reality. Publishing the book now, for this generation, is important as it allows for a more diverse landscape for children’s books. To see one’s self and culture reflected in stories is powerful and I hope this book empowers black children to pride and joy in reading.

Oluyemi M. Falomo is a retired award-winning engineer, father, and grandfather who has a passion for storytelling, music, and math. He was born and raised in Nigeria, where he developed a love for tales with cultural and moral values.

As a father, Oluyemi has always been committed to passing on his cultural heritage and love for learning to future generations. He has shared many stories with his children and grandchildren under the night sky, and The Princess and the Gourd is one of his most beloved tales. He has now decided to share this story with a wider audience in the form of a children’s book.

In addition to his passion for storytelling, Oluyemi is also an accomplished musician. He can often be found at his piano bench, playing and composing music. When he isn’t playing piano, he enjoys tutoring children and helping them develop their own love for math and music.
