Soma Nami Books just announced the second edition of the African Book Fair! The 2024 African Book Fair will take place from August 6th to 11th, 2024 in Nairobi.
The African Book Fair is Kenya’s largest book fair of African books. It will showcase books from 54 African countries, book chats, exhibitions, panel discussions, book sales, and more. There will also be a dedicated children’s program to connect young readers with African literature.
Soma Nami is a beloved bookstore located in Nairobi, founded by Muthoni Muiruri and Wendy Njoroge in 2021. The woman-owned Pan-African literary hub was named Brittle Paper‘s 2021 Literary Platform of the Year. Their name means “Read with me” in Swahili.
Soma Nami co-founder Muthoni Muiruri said of the African Book fair,
This year’s edition, like the previous one, is rooted in our commitment to creating a dynamic platform that celebrates African literature and promotes a culture of reading and learning across the continent. Our expanded edition this year underscores our dedication to nurturing the literary talents of African writers and ensuring greater access to literature for everyone.
The first-ever African Book Fair took place in 2023. There were interdisciplinary panels of experts from all corners of the literary world, library tours, author talks and, of course, lots of books! The inaugural African Book Fair saw over 5000 attendees and had 10,000 books on display from over 50 African countries. Based on last year’s success, we expect the 2024 African Book Fair to be an amazing experience for all attendees and participants. You won’t want to miss it!
Dates: August 6-11, 2024
Location: McMillan Memorial Library, Banda Street | Nairobi
