If you read Zulu, we have some good news for you. Happiness Books has released Zulu translations of two South African Novels: Sesizophila Ngale Ndlela (The Ones With Purpose) by Nozizwe Cynthia Jele and Izinkabi (Blood, Blades and Bullets) by Nathi Olifant.
Happiness Books & Production is an “independent, 100% black women-owned company” based in South Africa. The two new releases are line with their mission to “bring popular literature that is currently available in English to a wider base of readers in their native languages, as well as translating works published in indigenous languages to English.”
Sesizophila Ngale Ndlela (The Ones With Purpose), came out in February. It is an emotionally gripping novel about grief, terminal illness, and the weight of outliving loved ones. It tells the story of Anele Mabuza, who finds herself at a crossroads after the death of her sister, Fikile, from breast cancer. With her father long gone, a mother awakening from years of emotional slumber, and a brother consumed by unrelenting rage, Anele must decide whether to step up as her family’s caretaker or pursue her own dreams.
Izinkabi (Blood, Blades and Bullets), which was published last month, is a thriller set in the world of hitmen operating in Durban. Mazwi Nxumalo, a naive school dropout from rural Nongoma, finds himself in strange new world after witnessing a murder in a local forest. As he becomes entangled in the violent taxi industry and undergoes a traditional cleansing ceremony that turns him into a nearly invincible killer, Mazwi’s life spirals out of control.
As is evident from the descriptions, both books sound like page-turners. Happiness Books offers delivery service in South Africa. If you’re base elsewhere, feel free inquire about shipments to other countries.
