On Sunday, July 28, The Africa Centre came alive when renowned authors Michael Afenfia and Chimeka Garricks presented a special book reading event in Southwark. Bukola Akinyemi, the host of the event, agrees with Paperworth Books that the event “was a resounding success, drawing literature enthusiasts from across London.”

The event was buzzing with excitement, featuring readings from both Leave My Bones in Saskatoon by Michael Afenfia and Tomorrow Died Yesterday by Chimeka Garricks. This offered a rare opportunity for attendees to engage with the authors, learn about their writing process, and receive insights on how the novels came to be. Both authors also discussed their contributions to Covik One Nine, an anthology edited by Ibiso Graham-Douglas which encompasses the impact COVID had in Nigerian communities.

Ibiso Graham-Douglas, Founder and Publishing Director at Paperworth Books had only the highest praise of the event, saying:

We are thrilled with the turnout, the positive response from the audience, and the vibrant engagement…Events like these are vital for celebrating and promoting African literature on a global stage, and we are grateful to everyone who attended and supported this initiative.”

The Africa Centre has long since been serving as the hub for the exchange of ideas related to the continent, and its rich history and gorgeous displays provided the perfect backdrop for such an event. Its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere allowed attendees to truly absorb the thought-provoking readings and encouraged engagement between reader and author. Attendees had the chance to meet the authors, purchase signed copies of their books, and enjoy a lively discussion about the pieces that were read.
