“Nnedi Okarafor’s 2015 novella Binti picked up both of these Sci-Fi Awards?”

Nnedi Okorafor, posted on her Instagram that this question about her work was on the famous game show, Jeopardy! She was impressed that one of the contestants knew the answer right away!

Spoiler alert, it was the 2016 Hugo Award and the 2016 Nebulla Award, both for the Best Novella category.

Binti is the first book in Okorafor’s novella trilogy and was released in 2015. Since then, the trilogy has been entirely published. The second book in the triology, Home, was released in 2017 and the third and final book of the triology, The Night Masquerade, was released in 2018.

The Binti trilogy is about a Himba girl named Binti who attends Oozma University, a university on a planet somewhere in a distant universe. Combining a science fiction world with real world themes of cultural and familial identity, the Binti triology will became an instant favorite of any Sci-Fi lover.

Kenyan film director and award-winner, Wanuri Kahiu, said that “Binti is a supreme read about a sexy, edgy Afropolitan in space! It’s a wondrous combination of extra-terrestrial adventure and age-old African diplomacy. Unforgettable!”
