After the success of last month’s masterclass featuring Karen Jennings on the art of self-editing, we are excited to announce the second event in The African Writer’s Handbook Masterclass Series.

South African authors Karen Jennings and C.A. Davids will lead the next session, focusing on the ups and downs of the writing process. Hosted by Brittle Paper’s Writing Room and The Island Prize, the event is free and open to writers across Africa via Zoom (register here).

The African Writers’s Handbook was launched last month in response to the growing need for accessible, free training spaces for aspiring African writers, particularly those based on the continent and provides practical, hands-on guidance from some of Africa’s most accomplished authors.

Karen Jennings is a South African novelist and short story writer whose work often explores themes of isolation and power. Her novel An Island was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize and deals with the life of a reclusive lighthouse keeper. Jennings is also involved in mentoring emerging writers through The Island Prize, an initiative that supports African writers.

C.A. Davids is a writer and arts and culture worker. Her second novel, How to Be a Revolutionary, published by Verso Books and Penguin Random House, won multiple awards, including the University of Johannesburg’s Literature Main Prize and The Sunday Times Literary Prize. Davids holds a master’s degree in creative writing and has lived in various parts of the world, including South Africa, China, and the USA.
