Professor Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi will be in Kansas University (in two days) to talk about her new book.  Adelusi-Adeluyi is an Associate Professor at University of California, Riverside. Her book Imagine Lagos: Mapping History, Place, and Politics in a 19th Century African City book was published earlier this month by Ohio University Press.

If you are interested to learn about how Adelusi-Adeluyi’ reconstructs Lagos’s mid-1800s urban landscape—city streets, markets, squares, lagoons, and all don’t miss it. She might talk about archival sources, like historical maps, colonial correspondence, missionary letters, oríkì (Yoruba praise poetry), and newspaper articles, that used in bringing Lagos in the 19th century to life. She might also talk about her experience walking the streets of Lagos for three days as part of the research for the book.

In the meantime, buy the book here and go to New Maps of Old Lagos and on Imagine Lagos to explore all the photos, maps, and articles on Lagos brilliantly curated to give an immersive experience of Lagos in the past. These maps are especially helpful in imagining the old city through visual and textual narratives.

Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi will be in conversation with Dr. Damilola Adabayo. Adabayo is a historian and professor at York University.

The Zoom conversation will occur on November 12th at 11:00 a.m. CST. If you want to join the Zoom, register here!

We’re confident this will be an engaging conversation to listen in on!
