Mozambican publishing house Ethale Publishing has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help keep their work going in light of the country’s political instability.
Ethale has had to close down their book store and lay off many staff members in light of the increased violence against protestors in the country’s capital. They are asking the public’s help in helping keep their publishing house afloat. Check out the video below from Ethale’s publishing team about their emergency campaign:
Founded in 2016, Ethale Publishing arose in response to critical need for books, bookstores, and cultural support within Mozambique. In the years since, Ethale has published over one hundred titles in both print and digital formats. They have also launched the Emakhuwa language on Wikipedia in partnership with the Moleskine Foundation and Fondazione Aurora. Ethale opened the first bookstore dedicated to African literature in Maputo and further enriched Mozambique’s literary landscape by publishing the first Portuguese translations of works by African Nobel laureates. They also launched their first e-book app in Portuguese specifically designed for African literature.
Ethale Publishing won the PREICC Award for Literature in 2024 for their work with schools, private companies, the government and foundations to support social impact through literature, events, campaigns and innovative creative projects. This is particularly important as few other independent agencies exist to do this in Mozambique.
Let’s show our support for their great work in publishing and spreading African literature!
