Noo Saro-Wiwa’s Black Ghosts: A Journey Into the Lives of Africans in China follows Noo’s experiences learning about the “black ghosts” aka the African economic migrants in China. The Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards were launched in 2015 with the hope of finding the the best travel writing and writers in the world. The winner receive a Lander & May handmade globe for their achievement. This is the 2nd year that the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards are partnering with the travel company Viking for all of their awards.
Noo’s story demonstrates how intersecting cultures reveal our shared humanity. The way she tells these stories is with compassion and honesty, making each story she tells that much more realistic. This is a great book to include in the running for the Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year.
Black Ghosts is not Saro-Wiwa’s first travel book. Her first book Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria, published by Granta in 2012, was named The Sunday Times Travel Book of the Year.
Saro-wiwa is an accomplished writer, storyteller, and culture critic. She has contributed book reviews, travel, opinion, and more to The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The New York Times, and other major platforms. She was also a judge for the Jhalak Prize for literature and has contributed to various anthologies over the years. On top of that, she was named one of “The World’s 30 Most Influential Female Travellers” in 2018.
The winner will be announced in March.
Congratulations to Noo Saro-Wiwa!
