What is a motif? What is a story’s message? These questions have to do with theme, the unifying idea in a story. Theme is a powerful storytelling tool that many beginner writers either misuse or fail to use because it is so abstract. Fiction writer and editor Molara Wood has put together a set of techniques to help you build your story around powerful ideas.
Instructor Bio: Molara Wood is a journalist, editor, and the author of Indigo, a collection of short stories. She won the inaugural John La Rose Memorial Short Story Competition and received a Commonwealth Broadcasting Association award for her fiction. Her writings have appeared in anthologies including, One World: A Global Anthology, The New Gong Book of Nigerian Short Stories, A World of Our Own (Femrite Anthology), A Life in Full (2010 Caine Prize Anthology), and Route 234, an anthology of Nigerian travel writing.
