The Kalemba Short Story Prize has announced its 2019 shortlist, comprising six writers, including Mubanga Kalimamukwento, author of the Dinaane Debut Fiction Award winning novel The Mourning Bird. Currently in its second year, the $1000 Kalemba Short Story Prize, funded and administered by the publishing company Ukusefya WORDS, is awarded to the best work of original and unpublished short fiction written in English by a Zambian.

- “All to Love,” Lydia Ngoma
- “Pain by Any Other Name,” Fiske Nyirongo
- “Inswa,” Mubanga Kalimamukwento
- “Binary,” Jumani Clarke
- “Career Battle,” Mirriam Lusambo
The 2019 prize judges are the poet Kayo Chingonyi, Austin Kaluba, Mulenga Kapwepwe, and Brittle Paper editor Ainehi Edoro, who is the chair. Professor Edoro described the shortlist as “dramatic, exciting, resonant and evocative.” The stories are “woven around the subjects of love, resistance, loss and survival.”
The inaugural prize was won last year by Mali Kambandu.
The 2019 winner will be announced on 17 June.
