Chimamanda Adichie wants to get people reading again.

In an Instagram TV video posted January 13, she observes that many people, including herself, do not read as much as they used to. Yet reading, Adichie says, is “the entertainment form and the art form that gives us the most back.”

So to encourage reading, Adichie is hosting her first giveaway. Inspired by a woman who told Adichie that she used to pay her daughter to read, Adichie will be rewarding ₦50,000 to “young Nigerians (and Nigerians young at heart)” for their response of no more than 100 words to a short story.

UPDATE: Adichie has shared a link to the short story to which participants should respond. The link is here. Participants should post their responses in the comments section of this Instagram post by January 17, 9pm West African Time.

The response to the short story “can be in any form and about anything in the story, it can be about what you liked, disliked, what moved you, what struck you, what you learned, what surprised you. It can be a clever riff or a grave précis. It can illuminate a character untangle a plot point, or lay bare a hidden motive.”

Adichie will choose the best response and the winner will be paid via bank transfer. Participants must have a Nigerian bank account.
