Nigerian poet Titilope Sonuga will present a new edition of her acclaimed poetry show titled Open on Saturday, August 19 at the Triffo Theatre in Edmonton, Canada. The show will be a thrilling evening of poetry and music, so get tickets now if you are in the area.

After many successful showings in the UK, South Africa, Nigeria and Canada, Sonuga’s Open show returns to Edmonton. The show is based on her spoken word album, Swim. The evening will be “a meditation on surrender through poetry and music.”

Titilope Sonuga is the first poet to perform at a Nigerian presidential inauguration in 2015 and is the 9th Poet Laureate of the City of Edmonton. She is also the author of poetry collections, including This is How we Disappear, a moving reflection on the kidnap of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram.

Sonuga’s show will feature a collaboration with Afro-fusion band Melafrique and the Key 30 Orchestra.

Melafrique is an Edmonton-based band. They play a variety of genres such as jazz, R&B, reggae, neo-soul in combination with different African styles of music. The band includes members from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, Jamaica, and Canada.

The Key 30 Orchestra is a Calgary-based independent orchestra focused on creating and performing original music, collaborating on progressive projects, and showcasing the dynamic nature of classical music.
