The Morland Writing Scholarship Shortlist was announced on October 14th! The Miles Morland Foundation sponsors writing scholarships for scholars writing fiction or non-fiction and aims “…to support entities in Africa which enable Africans to get their voices heard.”

This year’s shortlist includes 20 writers from all over Africa. Eight writers are from South Africa, four writers are from Kenya, and four writers are from Nigeria, as well as a few writers from other African countries.

This scholarship grants writers £18,000, paid monthly over the course of twelve months. Writers chosen for the scholarship will then spend those 18 months creating their next work, sending in monthly “check-ins” and having the opportunity to learn under an established author or publisher.

The judging panel will announce the winners of the scholarship on November 22nd. This year’s panel includes author and founder of the Storymoja publishing company, Muthoni Garland, the co-founder and publishing director of Cassava Republic Press, Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, and the author of The Extinction of Menai as well as the lawyer and covener of the Bribecode good governance campaign, Chuma Nwokolo.
