Sauúti Terrors: The Dark Side, co-edited by Eugen Bacon, Stephen Embleton, and Cheryl S. Ntumy, has been acquired by Flame Tree Publishing, distributed by Simon and Schuster.
This acquisition was facilitated by Bieke van Aggelen of the African Literary Agency, who came on last year to represent this collection. “We were confident from the onset in the capabilities of Bieke and her team, comprising Martijn Lindeboom and Debbie van de Zande, on this second major Sauútiverse project!” said co-editors Eugen, Cheryl and Stephen jointly.
Sauúti Terrors: The Dark Side is a series of stories part of the Sauútiverse, a collaborative world-building project rooted in African mythologies, languages, and cultures founded by a collective of African and diasporic writers.
Van Aggelen was excited to work with the Sauúti collective on this project, sharing, “The collective is doing some ground-shaking work and I am only too pleased that the African Literary Agency is helping in securing the success and visibility of this unique African venture.”
According to the collective’s press release, the stories in this collection will be published in Flame Tree’s Beyond and Within series in two anthologies a year apart. These two anthologies will follow in the footsteps of Mothersound: The Sauútiverse Anthology, edited by Wole Talabi—an anthology that continues to enjoy global acclaim as a finalist in the Locus and British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) Awards, with stories shortlisted in those as well as the BSFA Awards and Nommo Awards.
Nick Wells, the publisher of Flame Tree Publishing shared his excitement about the acquisition, saying, “It’s our pleasure to bring to the world these two Sauúti Terrors anthologies that are a perfect fit for Beyond and Within, where we showcase the short stories of diverse and inclusive voices in speculative fiction.
Sauúti Terrors: The Dark Side has already received praise from fellow African writers of speculative fiction, such as P. Djèli Clark, award-winning author of Ring Shout and A Master of Djinn, who offers his thoughts on the collection:
This latest anthology returns readers to the groundbreaking Sauútiverse—an African-centered glimpse of possible far flung futures that eerily mirror our own present and past. Once again, the Sauúti Collective—in co-editors Eugen Bacon, Cheryl S. Ntumy, Stephen Embleton—has gathered a commendable and talented set of writers who deliver fantastically imaginative stories that remind us why we fear the dark, and the unknown.
We can’t wait for the release of these anthologies! Congratulations to the Sauútiverse collective!
