The third edition of the African Book Fair concluded in Nairobi with resounding success, cementing its position as East Africa’s premier literary gathering. Hosted by Soma Nami Books from August 7-10, 2025, at Maktaba Kuu in Upperhill, the fair lived up to its billing as the “biggest edition yet,” delivering four days of literary immersion that brought together readers, writers, and literary enthusiasts from across the continent.

With over 13,000 books from Africa and the diaspora available, the event showcased the breadth and depth of contemporary African storytelling while making literature accessible through discounts of up to 50% off recommended retail prices. This reader-centered approach, unique among continental book fairs, drew enthusiastic crowds who transformed the venue into a vibrant celebration of African literary culture.

Central to this year’s programming was the theme “African Stories in a Connected World,” which explored how African narratives transcend borders to reshape global storytelling. The fair, which was headlined by Zambian writer Iris Mwanza, author of “The Lion’s Den,” alongside celebrated African voices including Stanley Onjezani Kenani from Malawi, Nigeria’s Anwuli Ojugwu, and Kenya’s Shiko Nguru. It featured 38 dynamic events including book chats, panel discussions, poetry performances, and cross-continental literary collaborations.

The atmosphere captured the essence of what Muthoni Muiruri, co-founder and director of Soma Nami Books, envisioned: “The African Book Fair is more than a book market, it’s a cultural force. It’s a platform that affirms the value of our stories.” The fair also featured new book launches, adding to the continent’s expanding literary catalog. These launches provided platforms for emerging and established writers to share their latest works with engaged audiences, further strengthening the connection between African storytellers and readers.
