The wait is finally over, and the internet is losing its mind. Chimeka Garricks, author of the beloved novel Tomorrow Died Yesterday and the acclaimed story collection A Broken People’s Playlist, is returning with a new novel, A Prayer for Wolves.
Masobe Books broke the news on Instagram with three words, “HE IS BACK,” and readers responded like people who had been holding their breath for years. Fans demanded branded T-shirts to market “our star uncle,” others confessed they would not sleep for the rest of the year, and the 2027 release window drew its share of dramatic wailing. One reader summed up the mood with “We’re starving!!!!”
A Prayer for Wolves begins in Zalma, a red-earth town in Northcentral Nigeria, where twin brothers Isaiah and Ezekiel are raised to be their brother’s keeper by a quiet, faithful pastor father and a fiercely loving American mother. One twin grows up gentle, carefree, and hopeful; the other becomes a rebel scarred by family history and present tragedy. As religious violence, political indifference, and the aftershocks of inconvenient histories reshape Northern Nigeria, the brothers face a test their faith cannot answer with prayer alone, and they choose differently. Years later, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a stranger walks into a confession booth and admits to a murder, not to seek absolution but to explain how a preacher’s son raised as a sheep among wolves became a wolf. It is a sweeping, multigenerational novel about family, brotherhood, and the long search for grace.
Born in Dublin and raised in Port Harcourt, Garricks is a lawyer, editor, and screenwriter whose fiction has long been devoted to the city that holds his heart. His debut novel, Tomorrow Died Yesterday, is set in 2004 Port Harcourt at the height of the kidnapping of oil workers in the Niger Delta, and follows four friends whose lives collide after a kidnapping goes wrong. It has since found a devoted readership and a place in scholarly conversations about the Niger Delta, and an anniversary edition was released in October 2025. His second book, A Broken People’s Playlist, is a collection of twelve interlinked stories, each inspired by a song and all written as a love letter to Port Harcourt. HarperVia published it in the UK and US in March 2023, where it earned a starred review from Booklist, praise from Hari Kunzru, and a spot as a She Reads Best Book Club Pick of Spring 2023. Garricks also contributed to the 2024 anthology COVIK ONE NINE: Stories and Poems. After the sustained success of his earlier work, A Prayer for Wolves arrives as a long-awaited return, and the second quarter of 2027 cannot come soon enough.
Read the synopsis below:
In Zalma, a red-earth town in Northcentral Nigeria, twins, Isaiah and Ezekiel, are raised to be brothers’ keepers by the quiet faith of their pastor father and fierce love of their American mother. Yet they grow into different men—one, gentle, carefree, and hopeful for the future; the other, a rebel scarred by past family history and present tragedies.
Around them, Northern Nigeria is reshaped by religious violence, political indifference, and the aftereffects of inconvenient histories. As churches burn, communities fracture, and the bloodlust of the ongoing crises endangers the people they love, their faith demands more than prayer—it demands a choice. They choose differently.
Years later, in the red-earth city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a stranger in a confession booth admits to a murder. He does not seek absolution. But he explains his choice—how a preacher’s son, raised as a sheep among wolves, became a wolf.
Spanning generations, countries, and intersecting lives, A Prayer for Wolves is a sweeping novel about family, brotherhood, the dark choice between surviving or surrendering to evil, love, and a long search for grace.
We will share more details as the weeks unfold.
