Ohio University Press seeks submissions of novels, memoirs, and story collections for its Modern African Writing series edited by Dr. Ainehi Edoro-Glines, Assistant Professor of Global Black Literatures and founding Editor of Brittle Paper.

The series brings the best of new African writing to an international readership and showcases works by the most talented writers on the continent. In addition to original novels, memoirs, and story collections, the series features select works of historical and literary significance translated into English for the first time. The series seeks both new and established authors, compelling voices from diverse African perspectives.

Titles previously published in the Modern African Writing series include 491 Days by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Mrs. Shaw by Mukoma Wa Ngugi, Tales of the Metric System by Imraan Coovadia,The Extinction of Menai by Chuma Nwokolo, The Hairdresser of Harare by Tendai Huchu, and The Cape Cod Bicycle War by Billy Kahora. Forthcoming in spring 2021 is the novel The Actual True Story of Ahmed and Zarga by Mohamedou OuldSlahi, author of Guantánamo Diary. 

Ohio University Press invites African writers on the continent and the diaspora to submit proposals for their literary works. In addition to a cover letter with a narrative description of the book, the proposal should include a sample chapter or two, the anticipated length of the manuscript, the anticipated date of completion (if still a work in progress), and a curriculum vitae or brief biography.
