Lupita Nyong’o has teamed up with the Kenyan production company, Kukua, to produce Super Sema, an animated YouTube series for children.

Super Sema is about a 10-year-old Kenyan superhero who uses her determination, creativity, science, and technology to save Dunia, “the world” in Swahili. It was released on YouTube on March 9, International Women’s Day.

Nyong’o performs the voiceover for the series trailer and has joined the female-led production company, Kukua, as an equity partner. She shares in a statement to Variety,

I am grateful that these women are helping to eradicate the scarcity of Black female protagonists in television and am honored to work alongside them…I share Kukua’s goal to empower children through inspiring stories that feature characters in which the children see themselves reflected.

Super Sema is the latest of Nyong’o’s projects designed to empower and inspire African girls. She is also producing a Netflix animated musical adaptation of her children’s book, Sulwe.
