The Lagos International Poetry Festival announced a new publication titled Márọkọ́: Journal of African Poetry. The publication is annual and will be published in print and digitally. Payment for selected pieces range from 50 to 65 USD.
The word Márọkọ́ refers to a Lagos community of over 300,000 residents. In the 1990s, the community of mostly low-income residents was razed to the ground to make way for expensive real estate developments. The magazine evokes Márọkọ́ as a figure of the “unbowed spirits that relentlessly confront the reckless possibilities of Lagos.”
The editors are asking for “poems, critical essays, including reviews and profiles, creative non-fiction, visual arts and photography.” They are “particularly interested in the works of poets and writers from Africa, the Caribbean, and from across the black diaspora.”
