South African author Angela Makholwa’s 2009 novel The 30th Candle now has a TV adaptation out on Netflix on August 18. The series is titled Love, Sex and 30 Candles and features four best friends and their trials and tribulations.

It was directed by Stephina Zwane and stars Bahumi Madisakwane, Candice Modiselle, Gabisile Tshabalala, and Amogelang Chidi. The series follows the women through an entire year of 30th birthdays. During this year, the four best friends–Sade, Linda, Nowalzi and Dikeledy ‘Kedi’–navigate relationships, heartbreak, and a shocking development that threatens to tear them apart. Love, Sex and 30 Candles has everything that makes a centered on women’s lives, loves, and drama pop. There is fashion, juicy conversations about everything from sex to power, lots of fashion set against one of Africa’s most alluring cities, Johannesburg.

Makholwa’s novel The 30th Candle [which you can order here] was published in 2009 and is her second of four novels. Netflix announced the release in July and began streaming August 18.
