Nigerian-Canadian poet, playwright, and performer Titilope Sonuga has joined the Recording Academy!

Sonuga is a part of the 2024 New Member Class of the Recording Academy. Membership in the Recording Academy is a prestigious milestone in any music professional’s career. To be considered for membership, individuals must submit letters of recommendation from other music industry professionals and a written career profile. Recording Academy members vote to determine each year’s GRAMMY Award winners.

Sonuga’s work frequently crosses genres. She is the author of three collections of poetry: Down to Earth (2011), Abscess (2014), and This Is How We Disappear (2019). She has released two spoken word albums, Mother Tongue (2011) and Swim (2019). She has also written three plays, the most recent of which is a musical called Ada the Country (2020). She was the 9th Poet Laureate of the City of Edmonton from 2021 to 2023.

We have enjoyed following Sonuga’s genre-defying career. Her artistic evolution continued recently with the release of her single “Sanctuary” earlier this year. The song is a celebration of friendship and sisterhood.

When Sonuga shared the news on her X account last month, she wrote that she is “honored to be a part of this year’s @RecordingAcademy New Member Class!”

Join us in congratulating Sonuga on this career milestone!
