Father, forgive me,
for I have walked these streets,
as if my heart was still in me,
lying to myself just to rise from bed,
I whispered prayers of reconciliation
to the ghosts of us.
I gave in to my flesh,
let memories of our bodies as one
lull me to sleep.
I worshiped the divinity of us,
as I corrupted another soul,
giving what belongs to Caesar
to one who could never be him.
Father, intercede for this one miracle:
that we’d hold hands on that Menton beach,
with Sylvan Esso playing
a hymn of rebirth,
the salt of the sea between us
healing what was broken.
God, let me forgive me
for all my sins.
Let him,
and if not,
let him find joy,
even if it is far from me,
even if it is in the arms of another.
Amen.
