Iska Press, the Utah-based independent publisher that describes itself as a home for “unruly African literature”, is currently open for submissions on two fronts, and African writers working in English or in translation should take note.

Iskanchi Magazine, the press’s literary journal, publishes short, original, irreverent, disobedient, and experimental work, writing that pushes the boundaries of experimental fiction in both content and form. The Summer Issue is currently open, with a deadline of 30 May. Subsequent submission periods open in August for the Fall Issue and January for the Spring Issue.

Submissions to the magazine must be a maximum of 5,000 words, formatted in Times New Roman 12pt, double-spaced, and sent as a Word document. Writers should include a short cover letter, a brief bio, and social media links along with their story. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. The magazine pays $50 per published piece, and all published stories are automatically considered for the Iskanchi Magazine Prize.

On the book side, Iska Press accepts completed manuscripts year-round in every genre, provided they honour the craft of writing and are written by Africans in English or in translation. The press is interested in books about Africa and Africans, stories, lived or imagined, that expand the possibilities of African writing. Submissions should include a synopsis, cover letter, and author bio, and are accepted in Word or PDF format. The press aims to respond within six months, and accepted manuscripts are automatically considered for the Iska Book Prize.

All submissions, for both the magazine and book-length manuscripts, go to [email protected]. Full guidelines are available at iskapress.com/submit-page.
