Akwaeke Emezi Launches New Instagram Account for Their Visual Art

Nigerian-Tamil author Akwaeke Emezi opens an Instagram account dedicated to their art work. The account name is @akwaekeemezi and features their work in various stages of completion and exploration.

Emezi is known for their writing, but visual art has always been a part of their creative journey. With this Instagram page, fans of the award-winning author now have a new avenue for connecting with them.

They note in a statement posted on Instagram that “their creative processes are focused primarily on self-portraiture—using text, video, painting, and relics to build around questions of the metaphysics of self as an embodied Igbo deity,” also noting that their “practice is deeply rooted in the metaphysics of Black spirit and employs the lens of indigenous Black ontologies to examine embodiment, ritual, and rememory.”
