The University of Johannesburg Prize (UJ Prize) for South African Writing committee has announced the shortlist for books published in 2024!
In a press release, the judging committee expressed their satisfaction with the exceptional quality of submissions received during the submission period from 26 November 2024 to 28 February 2025. Following an intensive adjudication process, they have selected six outstanding works that showcase the diversity and excellence of contemporary South African writing.

Debut Prize
- Khumisho Moguerane | Morafe: Person, Family and Nation in Colonial Bechuanaland
- Siphokazi Jonas | Weeping Becomes a River
- Anna Stroud | Who Looks Inside
Main Prize
- Uhuru Portia Phalafala | Keorapetse Kgositsile and the Black Arts Movement
- Barbara Boswell | The Comrade’s Wife
- Shubnum Khan | The Lost Love of Akbar Manzil
The UJ Prize, established in 2006, celebrates excellence in South African writing across all genres and supports authors in gaining recognition for their work. The main prize winner receives R75,000 while the debut prize winner receives R45,000, acknowledging both established excellence and emerging talent in South African literature.
