The third and final season of Shaka iLembe, the critically acclaimed South African epic drama series, has officially entered production and is set to premiere on Mzansi Magic in 2026.
This concluding season will see the return of global star Nomzamo Mbatha, who continues both as Executive Producer and in her iconic role as Queen Nandi, leading a stellar cast in what promises to be the thunderous finale of Africa’s first epic drama. Lemogang Tsipa returns as Shaka, alongside the ensemble cast that has captivated audiences across two groundbreaking seasons.
The show’s remarkable journey began with Season 1, which became a cultural phenomenon and sparked nationwide conversations while breaking new ground in African television. Season 2 continued Shaka’s story as he began his reign as Zulu king at KwaNobamba, exploring his evolution as ruler and strategist. The series has become South Africa’s most expensive production and the most-awarded drama in the history of the South African Film & Television Awards, with additional recognition in the Netherlands.
“When we announced the first season, we were confident that Shaka iLembe would set a new standard for African storytelling and travel well into international territories,” said Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice General Entertainment CEO. “More than speaking to the heritage of the Zulu Nation, it took the story of a dynasty created from scratch by one man to the world, endorsed by the King’s descendants and told from an African perspective.”
What distinguishes Shaka iLembe is not just its unprecedented production scale, but its unwavering commitment to economic impact. MultiChoice’s largest investment in local content has created over 8,000 jobs in Season 1 and more than 16,000 jobs in Season 2, while showcasing South Africa’s stunning terrain to local and international audiences.
For Nomzamo Mbatha, the final season represents the culmination of her career-defining project. “The pressure is high,” she reflects. “Shaka iLembe has been a beloved show for the past two seasons and the project of my career. This third season is the culmination of a world that African viewers have found deep love and admiration for. It builds on the legacy of African television while taking audiences on a journey from an all-conquering reign, to sweeping love stories, to the founding of another nation and the arrival of colonists.”
With production underway for its 2026 premiere, the final season of Shaka iLembe promises high drama, visual grandeur, and meaningful storytelling that celebrates and preserves African identity. As the series prepares to conclude Shaka’s epic saga, chronicling vision, glory, and betrayal as an assassin’s spear pierces royal blood and suspicion unravels trust within the court, it stands as a testament to the power of Africans telling their own stories.
Season 3 of Shaka iLembe will premiere on Mzansi Magic in 2026, with additional cast members to be announced as production continues. If you missed Shaka iLembe Season 2, episodes 1–12 are available exclusively on Catch Up.
