The Day Nelson Mandela Came to Class, a children’s book written by Sihle-isipho Nontshokweni-Bikitsha and illustrated by Thabiso Gcwensa, was launched in August 2025 in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
In August, the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the book launch as part of its Making Reading Fun Program. Days later, Funda Wande brought the celebration to Kalksteenfontein Primary School, where reading corners were set up in Grade R–4 classrooms.

The Kalksteenfontein event featured a special storytelling session by Dr. Gcina Mhlophe, who transformed the classroom into a storytelling haven. Author Sihle-isipho Nontshokweni-Bikitsha described the day: “We gathered at Kalksteenfontein Primary School as Funda Wande to celebrate legacy. We jumped, read and sang alongside the kids today. Books were gifted, lucky packs won, reading corners opened, teacher appreciation gifts were shared. Mam’Gcina Mhlophe turned the classroom into a storytelling haven, her voice, the familiar sound of our childhoods, evoked jolliness and excitement. What a special way to soft-launch this book—with legacy, and lots of little hugs.”

The book helps children understand and challenge xenophobia while creating classroom environments of kindness, respect, and inclusion. Through its narrative, young readers learn about Madiba’s values and how to apply them in their own lives.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation stated: “Through stories, reading, and play, we are making learning a space where every child belongs.”

Funda Wande emphasized the project’s significance during Mandela Month: “This Mandela Month, we partnered with the WCED to set up reading corners in Grade R–4 classrooms at Kalksteenfontein Primary School. Dr. Gcina Mhlophe delighted the children with a special storytelling session. ‘Our children are our greatest treasure.’ – Nelson Mandela.”
The Day Nelson Mandela Came to Class joins a growing collection of children’s literature that honors Madiba’s legacy while addressing contemporary social issues through storytelling and early childhood literacy.
Congratulations to Sihle-isipho Nontshokweni-Bikitsha on this much-needed and vibrant work, and for the impact it is already creating in South African classrooms!
