Zainab Takes New York by Ghanaian novelist Ayesha Harruna Attah is making its way to the big screen.

According to reports from Publishers Marketplace, film rights to the book were recently sold to Assemble Media by Harruna’s agents at Pontas Literary & Film Agency.

Zainab Takes New York is Harruna’s fifth novel. It follows the titular character, Zainab Sekyi, a young woman on a quest to make a living and find love in one of the world’s busiest cities. It was published in ebook and paperback by Headline Accent in August 2021 and April 2022 respectively.

Assemble Media is a New York-based production company. Their projects “seek to entertain by bringing a sense of wonder to audiences, while reflecting contemporary issues and inciting meaningful conversations.” Among their credits are the movies “Mainstream” starring the Oscar-nominated Andrew Garfield, and “The Forgiven” starring the Oscar-winning actress Jessica Chastain. Ayesha expressed her delight on the development in an Instagram post.
