Nigerian novelist Chibundu Onuzo releases a new single. Titled “Heartbreaker,” the new release further’s Onuzo’s recent push to explore the musical side of her talents.

Chibundu (her artist name), who got married last year in a gorgeous London wedding, is an award-winning novelist. Her second novel Sankofa has been a brilliant success, enjoying a good bit of high-profile visibility. But she is also an amazing singer, a gift she has become more open about in the last couple of years.

“Heartbreak” is beautiful, very personal and mellow, capturing the soulful moodiness of impossible love. In the song, a lover appeals to the love interest to “take a warning and go” since she is a heartbreaker. The underlying feminist message in the song becomes apparent when at the end we learn that she breaks hearts because she wants “to be free,” to find herself before she can love. In classic Onuzo fashion, the song is about heartbreak but also about empowerment.

When Chibundu released a single last year titled “Home Coming,” she said it was part of a decision to fulfill the dream of being a singer she’d had since she was a little girl. She is pursuing the dream with gusto, to the delight of fans who knew her as a novelist and now get to know her through music.

She is playing three nights in London this week, beginning Thursday 23rd. Here is the link to book tickets. Titled “An Evening with Chibundu,” the show will take attendees “on a musical journey from her childhood in Lagos, Nigeria right up to the release of her latest single, “Heartbreaker.” With soul stirring vocals, a live band, and an electric atmosphere, prepare to be moved and uplifted.”

Congrats to Onuzo!
