Feminist writer Mona Eltahawy is the editor of the recently published anthology Bloody Hell! Adventures in Menopause From Around the World.
This collection features 17 essays about experiences of menopause written by cisgender and trans people, Black and people of color, from Kenya, Syria, Turkey, Ghana, India, Ireland, Canada, UK, and USA. The essays deal with early menopause, menopause while HIV positive, and trans masc, and nonbinary experiences, offering intimate and informative insights and anecdotes.
Eltahawy insists that this is “not a medical textbook, nor a guide on how to ‘remedy’ or ‘fix’ anything”. Rather, it is “a chance for new beginnings, knowledge and power and these essays encourage us to embrace the messy and beautiful nature of change.”
Published by Unbound, an independent book, magazine and podcast publisher, Blood Hell! is now available as in ebook and paperback in Ireland and the UK. The cover and interior illustration are the work of Egyptian-American artist Sheyam Ghieth.
Eltahawy announced the publication of the book on her blog, sharing
I’m so proud of this book and as it makes its way into the world, it travels with love and solidarity for all of you going through the menopause transition, and those preparing for it…Bloody Hell! is part of our feminist arsenal versus an increasingly powerful fascist patriarchy as it goes after our bodily autonomy and identities.
Congratulations to Eltahawy and the 18 contributors of this important anthology! You can buy a copy and read an excerpt here.
