South African independent press Modadji Books is asking for our help!

A recent change in local distributors—a strategic move aimed at long-term sustainability—has led to an unexpected short-term cash flow crisis. To weather this transitional period and continue publishing, Modjaji needs to raise R120,000 by June 30th.

For nearly two decades, Modjaji Books has served as a vital force in South African literature, championing the voices of southern African women writers. Founded in 2007 by Colleen Higgs and based in Cape Town, the independent press has curated an acclaimed catalogue of novels, memoirs, short stories, poetry, reference works, and the crucial African Small Publishers Catalogues. With just one full-time staff member—Higgs herself—Modjaji has built a reputation for publishing bold, necessary, and often overlooked voices, shaping the country’s literary landscape from the margins.

The funds from this fundraising effort will help keep operations running, ensure authors are paid, and support the continuation of the publishing schedule. Already, more than 20 supporters have subscribed to Modjaji’s campaign, but more help is needed to keep this independent press alive.
