Finnish-Nigerian feminist writer and cultural critic Minna Salami is the cover star of the latest issue of Astra magazine (2/2025), the Nordic feminist publication. Known for its rich legacy of progressive thought and artistic innovation, Astra’s new issue arrives just in time for summer and features a compelling lineup of voices from across the region and beyond.
Salami is a journalist known for her work exploring race, gender, and power through an Africa-centered feminist lens. She is the founder of the award-winning platform MsAfropolitan and has contributed regularly to outlets such as The Guardian and Al Jazeera. She is also the author of Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone (Amistad, 2020).
In a recent Instagram post, Salami described the honor of appearing on Astra’s cover as “huge,” and expressed gratitude to journalist Sofia Elie for the accompanying feature article. The same month, she is also featured in Tidningen Syre, a Swedish publication whose current theme centers on visions for the future.
Curated by editors Sofia Elie and Elliot Lundegård, Astra 2/2025 includes a rich mix of poetry, reportage, and fiction, with contributions from artists and writers around the world. Highlights include a photographic essay by Ukrainian photographer Anya Tsaruk, poetry on language and belonging by Jakob Niedziela, and a short story play by Mirva Helenius inspired by the writings of Svetlana Aleksijevic.
Astra 2/2025 is now available in stores across Sweden and Finland, as well as digitally via the magazine’s website. For those outside the Nordics, it’s a great opportunity to access Salami’s voice in dialogue with the wider Nordic feminist community.
