Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, have lost their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, the family confirmed on Wednesday, January 8.
According to the BBC, the child passed away on January 7, 2026, following a brief illness. Nkanu was one of the couple’s toddler twins. The family shared the news through a statement issued by Omawumi Ogbe and asked for privacy during this time.
Brittle Paper extends its deepest condolences to Adichie and her family, praying that they get through this really difficult time with grace and comfort. We hold them in our thoughts.
Adichie is one of the most widely read African writers of her generation, known for novels including Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Purple Hibiscus, as well as essays that have shaped global conversations about storytelling, gender, and identity.
