Nigerian author Freda Epum, whose work we’ve featured on Brittle Paper, is facing a difficult health crisis and needs our support.

After being diagnosed with a pituitary tumor this year, Freda has endured severe physical and mental challenges—including debilitating chronic pain, memory loss, and blinding headaches—while navigating medical gaslighting and fighting to receive proper treatment. The toll has been immense, depleting her resources and those of her loved ones.

Despite these overwhelming circumstances, Freda has shown remarkable courage in sharing her story and asking for help. Her mentor Cathy Wagner has created a GoFundMe to support her as she works toward healing and stability.

At Brittle Paper, we’ve long admired Freda’s voice and her commitment to her craft, including her acclaimed work The Gloomy Girl Variety Show. Now, we ask our community to rally around her. No writer should have to face a health crisis alone. Let’s show up for Freda as she has shown up with her art and honesty.

We’re holding you in our thoughts, Freda. Wishing you strength, healing, and gentler days ahead.
