Thirteen years after it was first published, Sue Nyathi’s The Polygamist is finally making its way to global screens. Netflix has announced that the adaptation of the Zimbabwean writer’s acclaimed novel will premiere on 12 June as a 22-episode supernovela, what the streaming giant is calling its biggest South African telenovela yet. The announcement marks a landmark moment not only for Nyathi but for Zimbabwean literature, which has long produced world-class writing that rarely receives the kind of international platform this adaptation now makes possible.

First published in 2012, The Polygamist follows Jonasi Gomora, a wealthy businessman whose carefully constructed empire begins to crack under the weight of the tensions between his wives and mistresses. The novel is a sharp, layered exploration of power, betrayal, ambition, and the emotional costs of desire, and it has held a devoted readership across Southern Africa for over a decade. That it took thirteen years to reach this moment is less a reflection of the work’s quality than of how slowly the infrastructure for adapting African literary fiction to global platforms has moved. Netflix’s investment signals that the tide may be shifting.

The production is in formidable hands. Directed by Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe, and Nthabi Tau, all award-winning filmmakers, and produced by Stained Glass Productions, the series stars Sdumo Mtshali and Gugu Gumede as Jonasi and Joyce Gomora, with an ensemble cast that includes S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Kenneth Nkosi, and Celeste Ntuli.
Nyathi herself announced the news on Instagram with the kind of quiet triumph that only years of patience earns. “For years we have spoken about it, the screen adaptation of The Polygamist,” she wrote. “We are done talking, the series is here. Thank you Netflix SA and everyone who was part of this amazing project.” The response from Zimbabweans online has been immediate and emotional, with one Reddit user describing it as “a big win for Sue and the whole Zim literary society.”

The global appetite for African storytelling is real, and The Polygamist — with its universal themes and its roots in one of Africa’s most underrepresented literary cultures — is exactly the kind of story built to meet that appetite and exceed it. The Polygamist premieres on Netflix on 12 June.
