Nigerian writer and scholar Tolu Daniel has joined Saraba Magazine as Editor-at-Large, with a particular focus on curating and editing nonfiction, the magazine announced on 12 October.
In the role, Daniel will help shape Saraba’s nonfiction publishing, working with writers and commissioning pieces across the form, from essays and criticism to memoir, cultural writing, and more experimental approaches. He will also contribute more broadly to the magazine’s evolving editorial vision.
Daniel arrives with an award-winning record in the genre. He won the 2025 Isele Nonfiction Prize for his essay “Notes of a Nonresident Alien” and received a 2025 Heartland Journalism Fellowship. He was also longlisted for the 2018 Koffi Addo Prize for Creative Nonfiction. His essays and short fiction have appeared in print and online publications, and his work has been supported by the Monson Arts Residency, Writivism, and the Goethe-Institut Nigeria. He holds master’s degrees from Kansas State University and Washington University in St. Louis, and is completing a PhD in Comparative Literature while living in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Saraba team said nonfiction has always been part of the magazine and that they want to give it more space, range, and ambition. They described Daniel as a writer and editor whose curiosity and sensibility make him well suited to imagining what nonfiction at Saraba can become.
Daniel said Saraba has been part of his journey toward the kind of writer he is today, calling the new role “full of possibility.” He added that he looks forward to creating room for new voices and unexpected conversations, and for work that challenges how we think about literature and the worlds it can make possible.
Founded in Nigeria in 2009, Saraba publishes writing from Africa and its diasporas across fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and other forms. The appointment is part of the magazine’s renewed publishing programme following its revival, with new work, editorial projects, and opportunities for writers to be announced in the coming months.
