The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2025, guest edited by celebrated Nigerian American author Nnedi Okorafor, is now available. The anthology, part of the renowned Best American series, features twenty stories that push the boundaries of speculative fiction, selected by Okorafor alongside series editor John Joseph Adams.
In her introduction, Okorafor reflects on the genre itself: science fiction and fantasy can feel like a box at times, but within it, you can expect anything. The collection delivers on that promise, showcasing authors who simultaneously fulfill and defy genre expectations. Readers will encounter robots struggling to form friendships, auditors calculating the financial worth of a lifetime, alien species teaching humanity how to read, and perhaps most intriguingly, someone finally addressing the child in Ursula K. Le Guin’s Omelas. The stories range from joyous to terrifying, heart-wrenching to absurd, each one expanding what’s possible within the genre.
The anthology features work by ‘Pemi Aguda, Kij Johnson, Tananarive Due, S.L. Huang, Joe Hill, Isabel J. Kim, T.J. Klune, Olivie Blake, Caroline M. Yoachim, and others. Okorafor joins a distinguished line of guest editors for the series, including R.F. Kuang, Veronica Roth, N.K. Jemisin, and Carmen Maria Machado, cementing her influence in the genre and her commitment to highlighting diverse voices within the science fiction and fantasy community.
The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2025 invites readers to open their minds and, as Okorafor promises, watch their worlds expand.
